At 11 years of age, while attending Catholic school, Robert discovered the local roller skating rink in Richmond, CA.  Since coed activities we’re not permitted at school, the roller rink full of girls quickly became Bobby’s favorite hang out and soon he was learning to use his skates to impress the ladies.  In September of 1955 Robert was invited to a birthday party at that roller rink for 10 year old Sharon Parker, a very accomplished competitive skater.  At the party she became his “girlfriend”, future wife, and lifetime skating partner.  While the less experienced Bobby had to play a bit of catch-up to skate with Sharon, after just 10 months skating together found success as a team, becoming the 1957 Southwest Regional Junior Dance Champions from a pool of 52 teams.
The duo retired from skating in 1960.  Robert graduated from high school and went on join the National Guard.  Sharon and Bob were married in 1962 and started a family.  Soon the parents of 2 young boys, the Behrendt family owned a floor covering business, eventually moving the business and the family to Maui in 1980.
Shortly after moving, a small rink on Maui with a starter competitive club invited Robert to come and work with the skaters.  He and Sharon became more and more involved, and after 20 years, they soon found themselves wanting to restart their competitive skating careers.  The rest is roller skating history; the team of Behrendt and Behrendt went on to become the most decorated domestic adult dance team of all time, earning a total of 50 national medals between the 2 of them.  Bobby and Sharon have earned the most team dance gold medals in the history of the sport, completing their career with their 14th National title at the 2012 USA Roller Sports National Championships.  The duo also hold the distinction of the possessing the longest string of titles in a single division, with 10 consecutive National gold medals in the Masters Dance division.
Robert now coaches at the Oaks in Portland, OR.  His students range in age from 6 years old to 71 years old, and he has coached several skaters and teams to national placements and titles.  Bobby is also a very well respected judge, having been selected for the National Championship panel the last several years, and organized the monthly Dance Nite Session at Oaks Park Roller Rink.  When not skating, Bobby enjoys taking his wife to the movies, cheering on his favorite team, the San Francisco Giants, and visiting with his grandchildren.
